Private Eye

Many Chicago artists have learned the hard way that it is illegal to host a public gallery event in one's apartment. In response to this, and as a way of subverting art world conventions, friend and fellow artist Patricia Peixoto curated an exhibition in her Chicago apartment bathroom. She installed a webcam to broadcast the event to the public, while guests attended by private invitation only. Each artist was given a 6"x9" pre-stretched canvas to work on for the exhibition. I turned mine into a handmade pinhole camera that looks back at the viewer while recording a long exposure on film. With fake eyelashes that glow in the dark, the camera asserts its presence while challenging the viewer's desire for both privacy and public affirmation – two things I associate with bathrooms.
