My search for images of transience and transformation eventually led to an encounter with mushrooms. Grotesque and beautiful, pervasive and impermanent, fungi are mysterious creatures. They are associated with decay yet are also alive and vibrant, existing on the threshold leading from death to life. My old pinhole camera was not suitable for this endeavor, so I spent six months developing a new one with features specifically designed for photographing smaller mushrooms.
