In 2003, I became interested in recording the way sand dunes rapidly transform, hiding and revealing different weathered objects each day. Inspired by transience, this body of work later expanded to include other subject matter and the use of a homemade pinhole camera – a crude instrument that lacks a viewfinder and mechanical controls. This camera places greater demands on the photographer. It requires a mindful approach, shaping the photographic process and producing a wabi-sabi aesthetic in the resulting images.
